Announcements and Dedications

This page and subsequent sub-pages will be dedicated to announcements and dedications.   There are lots of areas where they can use your business such as, post announcements of: death, birth, graduation, mother's Day, Father's Day, engagement, weddings, First Communion, and  Birthday Greetings, to mention a few.  If you want to purchase a page dedicated to a loved one the cost is $25.00.

Below is an explanation of how this came about.  My  brother Frank came up with the idea and wrote this.

I recently lost  a cousin who died tragically in her 30's. Unfortunately I had not been in touch with my cousin for many years, but the pain is still there!   My way of coping with my grief was to write a poem in my cousin's memory.  I asked Angie to post it on her website as a lasting tribute to the deceased.  Because Angie's website gets lots of traffic, I am showing the world my love for my cousin for eternity.

Angie was willing to post my tribute free of cost.  Because there is a great deal of work associated with maintaining a web site, such as: typing, editing, proofreading, etc. and then the cost of owning, operating a website etc. I didn't think it would be fair to accept Angie's offer of her labor for free.  I decided to pay her $25 to post my announcement on her website.
We are all in  business to make money.  The website Belize Garifuna Community has been serving the community for free.  That has not changed.  If people would like to show their gratitude and post announcements of: death, birth, graduation, mother's Day, Father's Day, engagement, weddings, First Communion, and  Birthday Greetings, to mention a few, you may enclose a picture and a few words for a fee of $10-25.
Each person paying for their ad or announcement would be a great way of: remembering your loved ones,  keeping in touch with the community, sustaining Angela's website, and thanking Angie for her hardwork and dedication.  As her unofficial agent, I am hoping  many of you will rise to the occasion and use this service and tell a friend as well.  Let's support a local business and a fellow Belizean!  "Yes we can!"

She raised her two children, Gloria Martinez and Clinton Martinez.  She also helped to raise all her nieces and nephews and also her grandchildren.  Her daughter, Gloria, passed away in childbirth.  So she had the task or taking care of Gloria's children.  Grandma Ambo was loved by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and all who came to know when she was alive.

I had the privilige of seeing her and taking some pictures of her in April 2010.  I am so touched that she was in good health and high spirits when I visited with her.  I was able to love up on her in the short time I visited with her.  She was well taken care of and will be missed.  RIP Grandma Ambo (my grand aunt, my dad's last living aunt).

Mr. Moses ‘Roysus’ Bregal Sr. (-June 17,2010)

The Bregal Family and the National Garifuna Council   sadly announce  the sudden passing of a great father, son and dynamic promoter of the
Garifuna Culture, Music and Dance, Mr. Moses ‘Roysus’ Bregal Sr.  His sudden demise took place in the early hours of Thursday, June 17th, leaving the community and the country reeling with shock and pain at the loss of yet another of our cultural icons.

Moses ‘Roysus” Bregal  was instilled with a deep love of his Garifuna Culture by his parents, especially his mother, the late Julietta ‘Look fu yu own’ Bregal, who participated in all Garifuna Rituals and other activities,  including the   Annual Re-enactment of the Arrival of the Garinagu to Central America and Belize.

Roysus, as he was popularly known,  was a member of the Warigabaga International Dance Group in the 1980’s and  travelled with them to CARIFESTA  in Jamaica and Cuba,   Festival Cervantino in Mexico,   European Music & Dance Festivals in London. Scotland, Austria, Germany in 1992, Belizean  Carnival in Miami, as well as other events in Guatemala and Honduras.

Because of his love of dance, and his ability to beat the drums as well as sing all genres of Garifuna songs, Roysus was selected by the National Arts Council in the 1980’s  to study choreography in Jamaica under the tutelage of the late, great Rex Nettleford! That month of intense study showed him the possibilities of taking Garifuna Dance to a higher level and he devoted the rest of his life  to working with youths in order to pass on his knowledge, as well as his passion for all  things ‘Garifuna’.

Roysus was also a musician who beat the snare drum in several bands as well as being a  member of the Forever Band, with which he produced several hit songs, including one called ‘ Kopes, Kolopes’. One of his many favourites was a song called ‘ When I da my boy an gal’ .

Roysus formed the Ilagulei (ROOTS) Dance Group around 1995  and with them he was able to showcase the talents of the young people in music, poetry and dance. He is the author of the Poem ‘ Ayante Adugahatinyu’ which is a reflection of the fisherfolks who bring in the catch for the Dugu Ritual. The  dance he loved to perform  the most was one called ‘Galun’. Around  1995 he composed  the song he is probably most famous for ‘AIDS IS A KILLER’, which he did to draw attention to the AIDS Epidemic!

In order to ensure that they would have materials to work with, Roysus spent a great deal of time collecting songs and making videos of cultural events  and saving them  in his personal Cultural Library. He was an avid composer and generally preferred traditional music since he felt that there is where the true meaning of Garifunaduau resides.

The Garifuna Community is saddened at the loss of Moses ‘Roysus’  Bregal and extend their deepest sympathy to his wife, Almira, children Dianne, Yvonne, Heston and Moses Jr, his grandchildren  as well as to his sisters, Mrs. Olivia Nunce Miguel, Ms. Syl Bregal, Mrs. Catherine Baltazar and the other members of his extended family, and most especially to his nephew, Mervin ‘Rugged’ Flores  of Hamalali Radio Station!

We continue to lose our great culture bearers and we continue to ask ‘ who will fill their empty shoes?” Roysus has done his part and has moved on to be with the ancestors. May he rest in peace and rise in glory!

Death of Merlene Nasario-Joseph

Date: Wed, 4 Aug 2010 10:06:44 -0400

Dear Officers,
It is with deep regret that my Family announce the passing of our beloved sister, relative and friend Mrs Merlene Nasario-Joseph. The viewing will be held at Grace Funeral Chapel In Brooklyn on North Conduit on Friday the 6th of August, 2010 from 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. They are requesting that we allow them the use of the Wabatou Cultural Center from 9:00 P.M. Until !!!. I have no objection to this request and I am asking all fellow Officers to state their positions on this matter. Her cousins Verna Sabal and Bembe Caliz have contributed financially and in many other ways to the United Garifuna Association. Plus, this is one of the main reason why we have a cultural center to accomodate our people when we are called upon to do so.  I visited the family last night on behalf of the association and was there until 2:00 A.M. this morning. This gesture will bring many more dividends to the association for the near future.
Your friend,
Wellington C. Ramos
