Admissions & Records Evaluation Technician

$3,191 to $3,953 per month

THE POSITION
Under general supervision, performs varied clerical and recordkeeping work; provides information to the public; acts as a receptionist; does general typing; operates City's switchboard; does related work as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Maintains the reception desk; types routine letters, documents and reports from rough drafts, marginal notes or oral and written instructions; types statistical data; receives, distributes and dispatches mail; checks columns of figures and names; maintains mailing lists; checks and alphabetizes records; arranges material for typing; reads proofs; enters information on cards and forms; assists or substitutes for superiors in handling more responsible office work; answers telephone calls and makes necessary connections; places local and long-distance calls; keeps records of calls and toll charges; operates various office equipment.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
This is an entry level Class in the typing and clerical series. Applicants for positions in this Class are not expected to have clerical experience; rather, a high degree of clerical aptitude and basic typing skills are considered necessary for an employee working in this class. Employees in this Class are normally assigned to offices where supervision and training are received from a more senior clerical or secretarial employee.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in typing and office procedures. Experience in public contact and switchboard duties is highly desirable.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Must have knowledge of modern office methods, procedures and equipment and general knowledge of arithmetic and proper English; must be able to speak clearly and distinctly with good voice modulation; ability to meet the public with tact and courtesy; to learn what services are performed by each department and the location of employees within the City; to spell correctly and use proper English; to perform a variety of clerical work; to make comparisons and computations quickly and accurately; to have skill in indexing and filing; to work cooperatively with others; to have a high degree of clerical aptitude and a liking for office work.
SKILLS
Must be able to type/keyboard accurately from clear copy at a speed of 40 WPM. A Typing Certificate from an accredited agency with the date test was administered, number of gross and net words per minute, number of errors, and the signature of the person authorized to issue the Certificate must be submitted along with the Employment Application. Must have the ability to use a switchboard, calculator, personal computer and word processor. Must have computer skills in Word. Skill in Outlook and Excel or Spreadsheet is highly desirable. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions. Office work requires using a computer keyboard and screen and heavy volume of phone work. Physical demands include sitting for long periods of time, standing, kneeling, bending, twisting, reaching and grasping in the performance of duties.
LICENSE
Must have and maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License.
THE EXAMINATION
The examination process is established by the City Personnel Officer and may consist of a Written Exam (pass/fail), Skill or Performance Test (pass/fail), and an Oral Interview weighted at 100% (a minimum score of 70% must be attained on the Oral Interview in order to qualify for the Eligibility List.) Candidates must pass all phases in order to qualify for hire from the Eligibility List.

The City of Gardena has an Agency Shop Agreement with the Gardena Municipal Employees’ Association and enrollment in the Association is a condition of employment.
SALARY: The salary range is based on a 5-step merit system with new employees generally hired at the first step with progression to the second step upon successful completion of a probationary period, with an annual review thereafter. Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) is negotiated with the representative labor group and is separate from merit steps.
LEAVE VACATION: 12 days per year, increasing with years of service.
HOLIDAYS: 12 fixed holidays per year plus additional 20 hours of Floating Holiday.
SICK LEAVE: 10 hours per month with no maximum accumulation.
RETIREMENT: The City participates in the Public Employees’ Retirement System and currently pays the employee’s portion of 7% towards retirement (2% @ 55).
HEALTH INSURANCE: Medical, vision, prescription and dental coverage is provided. City currently pays the premium for employee plus one dependent.
LIFE INSURANCE: $15,000 Group Term Life Insurance policy; optional coverage available; premiums paid by City.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The written exam is scheduled to be held on April 24, 2010 & May 1, 2010. Applicants for SUPER-K who pass the written exam will be invited back at a later time to take a keyboarding test and a test to assess their skill in the use of word-processing software (Microsoft Word).  IMPORTANT:  You MUST submit a completed application within the Application Filing Period (above) to be invited to participate in the April 24/May 1, 2010 testing process.
                                                     
NOTE: Once you have passed a SUPER-C or SUPER-K examination and your name is placed on the eligibility list, you may not repeat that examination until the list on which your name appears has expired (an eligibility list expires after one year). If you have taken but NOT passed a previous FAST-TRACK or SUPER C/K examination, after 90 days you may repeat that examination when it is next offered.

Individuals protected by the "Americans with Disabilities Act" (ADA) may request an accommodation, if needed, in the testing process. Job Summary
Work as a member of a crew to install new railroad track, maintain existing track and right-of-way.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)

Participate in group discussions including unit meetings, job briefings, safety meetings or process reviews. Remove and replace track and track components (e.g. ties, rails, bars, etc.)  Replace or repair track switches with specific components. Slide and align tie plates.

Drill holes through rails for insertion of bolts and tighten or loosen bolts at joints that hold ends or rails together.  Correct deviations in track surface, alignment and gauge.  Cut rails to specific lengths. Receive instructions, requests, orders, and information from posted bulletins, memorandums, rules and regulation manuals. Adjust, lift and roll rails. Sort track material for loading and unloading.  Install and repair street and railroad crossings.  Cut brush and vegetation from the right-of-way.  Spray switches, angle bars and joints with oil for lubrication.

The intensive nine-week program provides college undergraduates with a behind-the-scenes look into the democratic process. Through experiential learning in the office of a Congressional Black Caucus member, CBCF interns prepare to become decision makers in the policy making process. A series of educational activities, lectures, discussions and field trips help interns gain a broader understanding of the political process and African Americans’ place in history.
 
Qualifications
·       U.S. citizen or permit to work in the U.S.
·       Currently or recently enrolled in college full-time when applying for program
·       Demonstrated interest in public service, governance, and policy-making process
Selection Process
Congressional Interns are selected based on the following criteria:
·       Solid scholastic achievement
·       Strong writing skills
·       Community service contributions
·       Evidence of leadership skills
·       Quality of paper application and, in some instances, interview performance
The selection is highly competitive. Applications are submitted to CBCF and reviewed by a CBCFselection committee. Finalists are selected and notified by CBCF.
